An Introduction to Golf Cart Batteries, Acoucou Battery Buying Guide

Golf carts have become an essential means of transportation in many communities, including golf courses, retirement communities, and resorts. To keep these electric vehicles running, a reliable and efficient battery is crucial. In this article, we will explore the world of golf cart batteries.

What is golf cart battery?

A golf cart battery is the primary source of power for an electric golf cart. These batteries are deep-cycle batteries, which means they are designed to provide steady and continuous power over an extended period. Unlike automotive batteries that are used to start engines and then recharge from the vehicle's alternator, golf cart batteries are responsible for powering the vehicle's motor.

Electric golf carts typically operate at voltages of 36 or 48 volts, consuming between 50-70 amps of current while cruising at a speed of approximately 15 miles per hour. However, it should be noted that the current draw can increase significantly during acceleration or when navigating uphill terrain.

Golf cart batteries have two primary types: lead-acid batteries and sealed LiFePO4 batteries .

Lead-acid batteries

  1. Flooded lead-acid batteries (FLA)

Flooded lead-acid batteries, also known as deep-cycle or wet-cell batteries, have been the traditional choice for golf carts. These batteries use a liquid electrolyte solution and are constructed with lead plates submerged in sulfuric acid. FLA batteries are known for their affordability and are suitable for standard recreational golf cart use. They require regular maintenance, including checking and adding distilled water to the cells to ensure proper electrolyte levels.

  1. Sealed Lead-Acid Batteries (SLA):

Sealed lead-acid batteries, also referred to as valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries, offer a maintenance-free alternative to FLA batteries. SLA batteries come in two variations: Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) and Gel batteries.

  • AGM Batteries

AGM batteries use a fiberglass mat soaked in electrolyte as a separator between the lead plates. This design enables the electrolyte to be absorbed and immobilized, making AGM batteries spill-proof and vibration-resistant. AGM batteries are generally more expensive than FLA batteries but provide better reliability and longer service life. They are suitable for golf carts that experience frequent use and demand higher performance.

  • Gel Batteries

Gel batteries feature a thickened electrolyte in a gel form that is immobilized between the lead plates. This gel electrolyte provides improved resistance to vibration, deep cycling capability, and extended lifespan. Gel batteries are highly durable, maintenance-free, and can handle high-demand applications. However, they tend to be more expensive than both FLA and AGM batteries.

LiFePO4 batteries

In recent years, LiFePO4 batteries are becoming increasingly popular as golf cart batteries owing to their unique advantages.

  • Long service life:The lifespan of LiFePO4 battery is usually several times that of lead-acid battery. Acoucou LiFePO4 battery has more than 6000 cycles and a 10-year life, whereas lead-acid battery usually has 200 to 500 cycles and a 3-year life.
  • Maintenance-free:Unlike lead-acid batteries, LiFePO4 batteries do not require regular water replenishment.
  • Fast charging:Acoucou 12V 100Ah LiFePO4 battery can be fully charged in 5 hours with a charger. Lead-acid battery usually needs to be charged for 6 to 8 hours.

Acoucou LiFePO4 12V 100Ah is 29.98 lbs nearly 1/3 of the weight of the same type of lead-acid battery.

Acoucou LiFePO4 battery has a built-in BMS that people can check the situation of batteries through Bluetooth in the APP.

Overall, golf cart batteries are essential in keeping a golf cart running efficiently and reliably. Choosing the right battery type and ensuring proper maintenance can help maximize the performance and lifespan of the battery, allowing for a smooth ride on the golf course or other settings where golf carts are used.
